Performance Information
There is no mistaking when New Mexico Taiko begins to play, the resonant tones of the drums working together can quickly fill any performance space and command the immediate attention of anyone in the vicinity.
New Mexico Taiko group performs in all types of venues such as festivals, parades, community celebrations, banquets, educational programs and any event that wants to experience the rich cultural heritage of Japanese drumming.
Our Japanese style performance is powerful drum music with choreographed movement. This is very different from traditional Western drumming, Native American Drumming and even traditional African drumming. We do not sit or stay stationary. Our group even has a Taiko drama which is drumming with Martial Arts performed to tell a story. We also at times work with other groups such as the Miyagi Ryu Okinawa Dance group (Traditional Okinawa dance).
New Mexico Taiko group also does "Lecture Demonstrations." This is not really a performance, but an educational program about taiko history, drum beats and audience participation. This program is available for audiences of all ages and is an excellent choice for school-aged children.
